Maths
We love Maths at St. Kenelm's! We follow the White Rose schemes of learning and have been inspired by Mastery for Maths and the Shanghai Maths approach. We look to instill a strong sense of number and enable pupils to grown a fluency and confidence in Maths with the idea that 'Everyone Can'
We have worked with other schools in a Shanghai Maths Mastery group and are currently embarking on more work with Glow Maths.
For each year group, the scheme of learning includes an overview of the Maths that your child should be learning at any point in the year. Each year is split into three terms (autumn, spring and summer), and each term comprises individual blocks of learning about a particular topic.
You’ll notice that we spend lots of time building strong number skills in Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and early secondary years. These essential core skills lay a solid foundation for more complicated learning later on.
In every Maths lesson, we have fluency time to revise and recap knowledge and skills with our quick, low-stakes checks.
We subscribe to the ideology behind the 'CPA' approach which means - Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract or in other words: Concrete resources can be used to develop children’s conceptual understanding of place value and the four operations- we use resources like counters, Numicon, Base ten, bead strings, and place value counters to help us with this. Building on the concrete, we help our pupils to make connections between concrete by moving to different pictorial representations and then move their learning to abstract ideas so children can truly master concepts, building on strong foundations.
Our Maths Subject Leader is Miss D Groake.
