Phonics
We love our phonics and reading sessions at St. Kenelm's!
The Subject Lead teacher for Phonics is Mrs Mandy Hayes.
At St. Kenelm's we know that 'Phonics teaching gives children the tools they need to become effective readers.' [1]
We teach children to read initially by using a synthetic, systematic phonics approach (SSP) that we show fidelity towards. We use ‘Little Wandle, Letters and Sounds Revised’, which is a Department for Education validated scheme, as a means of planning, resourcing and assessing the children.
Please click the link below to view our phonics and early reading policy and find out how we teach phonics in daily, discreet lessons in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
For those children that find phonics a bit of a challenge we offer same day, keep- up and catch- up interventions. KS2 children are supported with the Rapid Catch-up Programme and children with SEND may also follow an individualised phonics plan.
